Brazil's initiative, the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF), aims to mobilize over $100 billion to protect forests by paying countries to preserve their trees. However, only a handful of nations have invested $6.5 billion so far.

"Policymakers must put better safeguards in place to protect the world's tropical forests," says Prof Heiko Balzter, a senior author of the study. "The TFFF is a way for governments and private investors to counteract deforestation drivers, but more countries need to pay into it to make it work."
