A Senseless Act of Violence
On November 29, a day meant for celebration, turned into a nightmare for a Stockton, California community. A mass shooting at a 2-year-old girl's birthday party left four people dead, including three children, and 15 others injured. Among the victims was 14-year-old Amari Peterson, a bright and promising young soul whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence.
A Life Cut Short
Amari was described by his family as a loving and caring boy who loved sports, including basketball and football. He was a brother, son, and cousin who was loved by many. His family remembers him as a promising young man who was making plans and looking into colleges of choice. "He was NOT involved in any gang activity. The only mistake this sweet boy made was being in the wrong place at the wrong time," his family wrote in a GoFundMe fundraiser [12[3.
The Victims
The victims of the shooting include:
- Amari Peterson, 14
- 8-year-old student, Stockton Unified Schools District
- 9-year-old child
- Susano Archuleta, 21
A Community in Mourning
The community is still reeling from the shock of the shooting. "No parent should ever have to bury their child," Peterson's family wrote in the GoFundMe fundraiser. "No family should ever go from planning birthdays to planning funerals." The Stockton Unified School District Superintendent Michelle Rodriguez expressed her condolences, saying, "As educators, we hurt deeply anytime a child is hurt" [13.
Investigation and Call to Action
The investigation is ongoing, with the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office working with the California Department of Justice, ATF, and FBI. A $25,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in the crime. If you have any information, please come forward and help bring justice to Amari and the other victims [12.
